How this works
The Crossword Pattern Search helps you find words when you are stuck on a crossword clue. It operates in two modes: Pattern and Anagram. Switch between them using the radio buttons at the top of the input form.
In Pattern mode, enter the letters you already know and use an underscore character (_) for each letter you do not yet know. The tool instantly finds every word in the dictionary that matches your pattern. You can place known letters anywhere, and wildcards fill in the gaps.
In Anagram mode, enter a set of letters and the tool finds every word that can be spelled using exactly those letters in any order. This is useful when you have all the letters of a crossword answer but cannot figure out the correct arrangement.
The optional word-length filter lets you restrict results to a specific character count. This is particularly helpful in anagram mode when you have extra letters or want to find shorter words hidden within a longer set.
The dictionary is a large general English word list derived from the ENABLE corpus, covering over 367,000 words including plurals, verb conjugations, and adjective forms.

Tips for using the Crossword Pattern Search
- Use an underscore _ for every unknown letter — for example, enter
___TIONto find all 7-letter words ending in -TION. - Try anagram mode when a crossword clue feels like a jumble or scramble of letters — you may already have all the letters you need.
- Use the word-length filter to narrow results when you know exactly how many letters the answer has.
- Combine known letters with wildcards for the best results — even one confirmed letter dramatically reduces matches.
- If pattern mode returns too many results, switch to anagram mode or add more known letters to tighten the search.
